Role of the Parent Governor

Parent governors play a vital role in school governance by bringing a parental perspective to the governing body. They are expected to contribute to the strategic direction and decision-making of the school, ensuring that the needs and views of parents are considered. However, they are not there to represent individual parents or their children, but rather to act in the best interests of the school as a whole.

Key aspects of a parent governor's role:

·        Providing a parental perspective:

Parent governors offer insights into how school policies and practices might impact families and children.

·        Supporting and challenging:

They should offer support to the school leadership and staff, while also constructively challenging them to ensure high standards and effective practices.

·        Strategic contribution:

They participate in developing the school's vision and strategy, overseeing its financial performance, and holding the headteacher accountable for educational outcomes.

·        Accountability:

Parent governors are accountable to the governing body and the wider school community for their decisions and actions.

·        Confidentiality:

They must maintain the confidentiality of Governing Body discussions and decisions.

·        No delegation:

Parent governors are not delegates of the parent body and should not be expected to represent individual parents' views on specific issues.

·        Acting in the best interests of the school:

Their primary responsibility is to act in the best interests of the school and all its pupils, not just their own children.

·        Engaging with parents:

While not representing individual parents, parent governors should still engage with the wider parent community to understand their views and concerns, and communicate the work of the governing body.

·        Following school procedures:

They should guide parents to follow the school's established procedures for addressing concerns or complaints.
